Once you have arrived at the Unterörtl vineyard, a marvellous ascent of 200 metres to Juval Castle is waiting for you - beckoning with a breathtaking view from the top. On several occasions mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner himself guides visitors through his fairytale home. Experience countless souvenirs from his adventures all over the world in the 'cave of enlightenment' and the 'house of gnomes and trolls'.
History of Juval Castle
Juval Castle was built in 1278 by Hugo von Montalban on the site of a prehistoric settlement. The fortress belonged to the noble von Starkenberg family for one century. After frequent change of ownership the fortress fell into disrepair in 1913. In 1913 the Dutch colonial master William Rowland bought and rebuilt Juval Castle. Juval Castle has been the home of the extreme alpinist Reinhold Messner since 1983.
