Juval Castle – jewel high up on the mountain

Juval is more than a castle: it is a work of art in itself, high above Naturns.

Castle, museum, wine-growing estate, organic farm, tavern... - “a vision and yet real”, as the lord of the castle, Reinhold Messner, says. “To preserve and tend the mountain landscape and cultural heritage all over the world” is how Messner describes his vision, which on the history-steeped edge of the mountains (approx. 1000 m) between Valvenosia and Schnalstal, amid vineyards and glaciers, has become reality and of which Juval itself occupies a special position in the corner of Europe with the most castles to its name.

An attempt, says the famous lord of the castle, to give back to the mountains and the people what the Indians call “tashi delek” – a little peace and happiness. But you could also describe Juval as a mountain of adventure…

From the Himalayas to the wine tavern by way of Africa

At any rate: Juval is always worth a visit. Messner is in residence in the summer but the castle is open to everyone. The inner courtyards with Himalayan cedars and a dozen rooms can be seen by visitors. One of these rooms is the castle chapel with religious symbols from three millennia, the tower with historic pictures and an oil painting by Luis Trenker, the “Höhle der Erleuchtung” (“The Cave of Enlightenment”) or the “House of Trolls and Gnomes>”. You can also see frescoes by “Kaiser Max”, the biggest collection of Tibetan artefacts in the world, a gallery of mountain pictures extending over several storeys and Messner’s mask collection from five continents. You can also catch a glimpse of the private living areas and have a look into the expedition cellar with original equipment from his mountaineering trips.

Not only is quite something Juval in itself, the surrounding area is remarkable, too: fantastic stories have grown up around the castle, like the one about the black knight with the three wine bottles or the story of “Ötzi” who could have set off to the place where he was found just 8 kilometres from here…but most importantly, all around the castle has sprung up quite naturally a complex of farmhouses and taverns which invite you to stop and take a break: Mountain farm, castle tavern, wine-growing estate, the whole is more than the sum of its parts, Juval is more than a castle – it is a work of art in itself.

Circular tour & the Waalweg trail

In addition to tours of the castle, the great outdoors also invite you to have an adventure: Nature trails and footpaths wind their way up and around the castle – through fruit orchards and vine terraces, past picturesque Waaler cottages and the “Waalerschelle” and demonstrate vividly why Messner and the country people, natives and visitors alike love this country so much…

Organic farm & castle tavern, wine-growing estate

Beneath Juval lies the mountain farm of Oberortl, which is run as an organic farm. With cows, sheep, goats, chickens, horses, highland cattle… also part of the farm is the castle tavern (Buschenschank), which in addition to farm produce and fine South Tyrolean cooking, “dishes up” the ideal atmosphere for parties and celebrations (for up to 60 people) and prepares the hay for the healing hay baths.

To start with you enjoy an aromatic steam bath and inhale lovely-scented flower extracts with a mild steam temperature of 45°C. The pleasant warmth opens up the senses and loosens all your muscles. Then, lying on a marble bed, you are given a pleasant brush massage with soap. Dead skin cells are literally brushed away and the skin is fresh and soft once again.

Now a relaxing jacuzzi bath invites you to step in an feel wonderful. Close your eyes and feel the water on your body. Pantai Luar is a traditional application from East Asia. It is a special massage technique with thermophysical components. Literally translated Shiatsu means finger pressure and originates from traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine. Lines of energy flow, the meridians, run through our body. If energy can flow unhindered in these lines, life develops harmoniously for us. Should blockages occur due to negative influences (stress, everyday tension, lack of exercise…), our sense of well-being can be thrown off balance. Tension, nervousness, tiredness and a lack of energy, headaches… are examples of this. The aim of Shiatsu is to remove these energy blockages by pressing with fingers, hands, elbows, knees and feet and through stretching and gentle touches in a pleasant atmosphere. Thus, Shiatsu has a soothing or invigorating effect, depending on the type of stimulation. This traditional Chinese massage is called Tuina in Chinese or Anmo. It is especially effective in the case of imbalances of the movement apparatus and the symptoms of pain, circulatory problems, restricted movement. Tuina is also used for arthritis, operations, injuries, a stroke, after nerve injuries, and also in the case of vegetative disorders (nervous stomach, head tension, pain, migraine, tension…)
