St. Prokulus
Naturns has history – it has the St. Prokulus Church with the oldest frescos in the German-speaking world.
| Those who discover Naturns and the surrounding area on the wheel of time find out about a turbulent and moving story and find milestones of art history, including a Roman one, namely the Via Claudia Augusta already passed through here in 46 A.D. Other finds prove that there was already life here 6,000 years before Christ! The famous monument and the most described one in South Tyrol is the St. Prokulus Church on the edge of Naturns. Built in the 7th century as a memorial to the holy Prokulus – Bishop of Verona and later honoured as patron saint of cattle and irrigation supplies – the frescos from this age (the pre-Carolingian era) are some of the most important art treasures in Central Europe. The Gothic frescos from the 14th century, which represent the story of the Creation, are also worth seeing. St. Prokulus on the swing on the south wall of Prokulus church – a symbolic representation of his flight over the city walls of Verona. You can discover more famous pre-Carolingian and Gothic frescos on guided tours. The archaeological exhibition in the town hall also has some curiosities. |
